The South of Russia Research and Education Center (REC) was established by the Order of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 2054-r dated July 24, 2021, within the framework of the Science National Project. Apart from the South Russian REC, the South of Russia REC incorporates Rostov and Volgograd regional research and education centers.
The South of Russia REC is one of 15 world-class centers in the Russian Federation, uniting leading higher education bodies, research organizations, and scientific centers.
The Governor of the Rostov region and the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the REC, Vasily Golubev, has approved the following key areas of the program for the South of Russia REC:
1. AgroTech: farming machinery and equipment manufacturing for the agro-industrial complex;
2. FoodDesign: engineering for healthy food, personalized nutrition, innovative gastronomy advancements;
3. AquaTrack: improving water resource management through the development of scientifically and technologically advanced methodologies;
4. Biological and medical engineering: biocatalytic, biosynthetic and biosensory, biomedical and veterinary, regenerative, genomic, proteomic and postgenomic, cellular, nano-, bio-, information, cognitive technologies;
5. Genetics. Cytogenetics, molecular genetics, mutagenesis, population and evolutionary genetics, physiological genetics, ontogenetics, behavior genetics, microbial genetics, plant genetics, animal genetics, human genetics, environmental genetics;
6. IT. Intelligent transport systems, Artificial Intelligence in engineering and design, production and operation of new products.
At present, the participants involved in the South of Russia REC are:
23 universities;
14 research institutions;
40 industrial partners and development institutions.
The strategic aim of the South of Russia REC is the integration of science, innovation and production.
The high priority objectives of the South of Russia REC include the following:
– development of scientific, research and educational infrastructure;
– facilitating mutually beneficial partnerships between science, business, and education;
– fostering regionally relevant research and the development of advanced scientific innovations;
– development of the industrial, agro-industrial complexes, and related industries;
– ensuring sustainable socio-economic development of the region.
Thus, the South of Russia REC serves as a bridge between the academic community, businesses, and authorities of the center.
In addition to that, within its framework of activities, the South of Russia REC, universities and research institutes of the Krasnodar region, work on the following science and technology projects:
1. Creating technologies and formulations for specialized, functional, and personalized food products on the basis of food composites, concentrates and ingredients;
2. Development of the AI-powered information system and spatial analysis tool for controlling greenhouse gas emissions;
3. Development of the intelligent green technology aimed to improve the nutritional value of biomaterials through low-temperature plasma processing;
4. Establishing a set of biorational technologies for farming that operate at the ecosystem level to ensure environmental protection, soil fertility, and human health;
5. Hybrid membrane technology for reagent-free processing of industrial acid-containing wastewater;
6. Improving the technology used to produce cider and carbonated cider from apples grown in the southern regions of Russia.
